About Jonathan Garner

Espalier Training

Sydney horticulturist, gardening consultant and designer Jonathan Garner heads our design team. Recognized as one of Australia’s most skilled horticulturists and versatile garden designers, Jonathan has received numerous accolades, including past president of the NSW branch of the Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH) and selection as the youngest fellow of the AIH.

Jonathan’s more than 20 years of horticultural experience began with his studies at the Ryde School of Horticulture while simultaneously apprenticing to one of Sydney’s most respected landscape gardeners. Moving to England after graduation, Jonathan honed his horticultural skills by working as head gardener on a private estate. Additional studies at Merrist Wood College accorded him his City and Guilds certification in horticulture. His studies at Merrist Wood also provided him with the experience of involvement in two Chelsea flower shows and RHS Wisley Gardens. Since returning to Australia in 1993, Jonathan has built a reputation as one of the states most knowledgable horticulturists.

Now an acknowledged expert in the specialised practices of espalier and plant training, pruning techniques, soil management, crop protection and plant establishment practices, Jonathan’s fervent belief in promoting horticultural best practices has earned him invitations to speak on these practices. His speeches and lectures have been on behalf of AIH, Royal Botanic Gardens, TAFE colleges, Sydney in Bloom’s expert panel, Gardening Australia Expo, National Trust, The Landscape Contractors Association of NSW and garden clubs. As a host of gardening talkback on 702 ABC radio Summer Series, Jonathan has displayed an easy manner along with an ability to make complex issues understandable. Moreover, having been commissioned by Murdoch Books to write on sustainable gardening from the soil up, he is the author of the highly acclaimed book “Dry Gardening Australia,” one of the best selling gardening books of 2007.
